What I do

I design and build things on the web — usually from end to end, often for small teams who want to ship something they're actually proud of.

My day-to-day is a mix of interface design, front-end engineering and the quieter, less glamorous work of getting copy, structure and motion to agree with each other. I care about the part where everything finally feels right.

How I work

Slowly, at first. Quickly, when it counts. I tend to start in a text editor rather than a design tool — usually the first thing I make for a new project is a single, plain HTML page that argues for the structure. Once that page feels right, the rest follows.

What this site is

A small home for the writing and projects I want to keep around. Some of it is advice I'm trying to take, some of it is notes for next time. If anything here saves you twenty minutes, it's done its job.

Get in touch

The fastest way to reach me is by email at hello@joshuavanraak.nl. I read everything, even if I'm slow to reply. If you'd rather follow along, the monthly note from the footer is the main place I share what I'm working on.
